Mobile App or Mobile-Friendly Website: What Should You Build First?

"We need an app" is one of the most common requests we hear. Sometimes that is exactly right. Often, a fast, mobile-friendly website delivers the same results for less money and reaches more people. Here is how to decide.

What a mobile-friendly website does best

  • Reach: anyone with a browser can use it immediately, no download required.
  • Discoverability: websites appear in Google search; apps mostly do not.
  • Lower cost: one build works on every phone, tablet and computer.
  • Easy updates: changes go live instantly without app store reviews.

What a mobile app does best

  • Repeat use: an icon on the home screen keeps you top of mind for frequent users.
  • Push notifications: reach users instantly with reminders and alerts.
  • Device features: camera, GPS, offline storage and biometrics work best in native apps.
  • Smooth, app-like experience for complex daily tasks.

Five questions to help you decide

  1. How often will people use it? Daily or weekly use favours an app. Occasional visits favour a website.
  2. How will people find you? If new customers find you through search, start with a website.
  3. Do you need device features? Offline data capture, location tracking or scanning point to an app.
  4. What is your budget? An app usually costs more and needs ongoing updates for new OS versions.
  5. Do you already have a strong website? If yes, an app can be a great next step for loyal users.

The common winning path

Most organizations we work with start with a fast, mobile-first website that ranks on Google and converts visitors. Once they have a base of regular users, such as parents checking results, members giving weekly or customers re-ordering, they add a mobile app for those users. Both share the same back-end system, so data stays in sync.

What about progressive web apps?

A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that can be installed on the home screen and work partly offline. It is a good middle ground for some projects, though it cannot match native apps for every device feature, especially on iOS.
